International Competition of Performing Arts 2023

Registration Form - US and International Residents

 Chhandayan  center of Indian Music and Dance  is very happy to invite you to apply for our International Competition of Performing Arts  conducted virtually.

Candidates from all over the world are welcome to apply, using the attached application form (please use separate forms for each subject). Please submit the application form along with supporting documents. Deadline for submitting the application is January 31st, 2023.

Deadlines and Timelines

The Deadline for submission of application: January 31st, 2023.

1) PRELIMINARY ROUND:  The Preliminary Screening will be done by February 10th, 2023. A committee of experts will review the applications, verify the documents, and decide upon the criteria set forth. The decisions will be notified to all applicants by February 15th, 2023; selected candidates for the Semi-finals will be requested to submit videos of performances.

The Deadline for submission of videos for the Semi-final: February 28th, 2023.

2) SEMI-FINAL: The Semi-final level of the competition will be conducted based on the submitted videos by a panel of experts in each subject between March 1st and 15th, 2023. The decisions will be conveyed to all candidates on or before March 20th, 2023. Selected candidates for the finals will be informed with specific details of dates, times, and the mode. 

3) FINAL: The Final level of the competition will be held between April 1st and 15th, 2023. It will be conducted online through zoom, Google Meet or Skype.

The Awards will be announced on April 20th, 2023. 

AWARDS:

Winners from South-Asia will be awarded as follows: 
  • First prize (in each category): 1) Award Certificate, 2) INR 3000, 3) A Memento
  • Second prize (in each category): 1) Award Certificate, 2) INR 2000,  
  • Third prize (in each category): 1) Award Certificate, 2) INR 1000.

Winner from other countries will be awarded as follows:
  • First Prize (in each category): 1) Award Certificate, 2) A Memento
  • Second Prize (in each category): 1) Award Certificate
  • Third Prize (in each category): 1) Award Certificate
 
APPLICATION GUIDELINES FOR THE COMPETITION

1) Entry fee:  There is an entry fee to apply: INR 200, if residing in South Asia, and USD 20 for candidates from other countries.(service fee will be added at checkout)
2) Documents to be submitted: Each application should be supported by the following documents: 
                  i) Consent letter/s from most recent Guru/s, teacher/s or institution/s, 
                  ii) Proof of age, such as birth certificate or government issued document with date of birth, 
                  iii) Proof of address from authorized entity.

3. Each candidate can appear in a maximum of two categories/subjects. 

PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES

 1. Duration of performances: Level 1 - 5 minutes, Level 2 - 6 minutes, and Level 3 - 7 minutes.
 2. Candidates are required to perform from the following choices:
 
Vocal: Classical
Level 1 - A Dhrupad/Khayal in one of these Ragas: Yaman, Bhoopali, Bilawal, Bhairab.
Level 2 - A Dhrupad/Khayal in one of these Ragas: Bhairabi, Durga, Kafi. Jaunpuri.
Level 3 - A Dhrupad/Khayal in one of these Ragas: Tori, Desh, Malkaunsh, Poorvi.

Vocal: Semi-classical
Level 1 – In one of these ragas and talas: Kafi, Khamaj, Bhairabi, Keharwa tala, Dadra tala.
Level 2 – In one of these ragas and talas: Pahari, Jogiya, Piloo, Sitarkhani tala, Roopak tala.
Level 3 – In one of these ragas and talas: Tilang, Sohini, Jinjhoti, Deepchandi tala, Jat tala.

Vocal: Regional Songs
Level 1 – A song from the place of origin (in mother tongue) in Keharwa tala or Dadra tala.
Level 2 – A song from a region beyond place of origin (not in mother tongue) in Roopak tala or Sitarkhani tala.
Level 3 – A song from any region of India with a couple improvisations in Deepchandi tala or Jhaptaal.

Instrumental: String and Wind
Level 1 - A performance in Tintaal in one of these Ragas: Yaman, Bhoopali, Brindabani Sarang.
Level 2 - A performance in Roopak taal in one of these Ragas: Desh, Shyam Kalyan, Gurjari Tori.
Level 3 – A performance in Jhaptaal in one of these Ragas: Durga, Bihag, Bageshri, Malkaunsh, Lalit.

Percussion:
Level 1 - A solo in one of these talas: Tintaal, Chautaal.
Level 2 - A solo in one of these talas: Roopak tala, Dhamar Taal.
Level 3 - A solo in one of these talas: Jhaptaal, Surfanktaal.  

ACCOMPANISTS, INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPEMENT

Rules of the competition: Candidates will be required to 1) choose their own accompanist/s, notify Chhandayan with their details at least two days prior to performance and bear all related expenses, 2) appear in professional attire, 3) maintain punctuality, 4) assume responsibility of proper audio-video quality of the performance/s, 5) use own instrument/s or equipment, 6) perform adhering to the guidelines, 7) avoid aid/suggestion/interference by Guru, teacher/parents/guardian/friend, 8) abstain from the use of any technical help other than specified in the guidelines.
